Russell Pomeranz has thirty years of experience leading the finance and administrative departments of nonprofit organizations with missions related to social services, education, the arts, and think tanks. Russ started his own consulting firm, The Claverack Advisory Group, to focus on the critical connection between the nonprofit financial function and organizational programmatic, strategic, and financial trajectories.
Prior to establishing Claverack, he played a critical role at Fiscal Management Associates (FMA). As the Manager of Financial Advisory Services, his role varied from Interim CFO positions to leading business planning engagements, organizational budgeting, situational consulting, coaching on investment pools, and conducting training. Clients ranged from nonprofit organizations and foundations to government agencies.
From 2002–2007, Russ was the COO / CFO of the Vera Institute of Justice, a $25 million criminal justice think tank. During his tenure, he started and ultimately helped spin-off financially viable nonprofits such as Esperanza. He also created and established the Vera Development Department, which grew unrestricted revenues from $50,000 to $1,000,000 in 3 years.
Russ has also served as the Director of Finance at the Council of Foreign Relations; CFO at Spence Chapin Services to Families and Children; and held senior finance and administrative positions with Meet The Composer and the International Center of Photography.
Russ is an adjunct Professor of Public Administration at NYU Wagner. He is chair emeritas of the Workforce Professionals Development Institute (WPTI), president emeritas of the Columbia County Historical Society, Treasurer of Job Path, and also serves on several other nonprofit boards. He's been published in The New York Times, Chronicle of Philanthropy, The Wall Street Journal, and the CPA Journal, and holds a degree in economics from Haverford College and an MBA from the University of Michigan.
